Our Steel Centre Toastmasters club is a non-profit diverse group of people who come together, to listen, learn, share and lead each other.

Everyone has their own personal reasons for joining. Some people seek the coveted “Competent Communicator” certificate and stay as long as it takes to earn it, which is usually a year. Other people realize the club has so much to offer, and stay on for many years, earning more awards and certificates, gaining expertise and mentoring others.

Our club welcomes everyone. If you are a house wife or house husband, or perhaps a retiree, and have stories you would like to share. At toastmasters, we can guarantee a captive audience. Who knows? The story you have to share may be a contest winner someday. Toastmasters love a good story, and we would love to hear yours.

Perhaps you were like me, fearful of speaking in front a group. Any group. I used to faint, I was that bad. I did take Christopher Leadership course, and enjoyed it immensely. But after 10 speeches, I still needed more work, more practice. Toastmasters have more manuals, feedback, and lots of opportunity to speak, and even take roles, if you feel up to the task. The more you practice you get, the more confidence you will have. Toastmaster’s has helped me greatly, in this regard. I leave each meeting with a sense of accomplishment, weather I win an award or not. I spoke. People enjoyed it. And I haven’t fainted in a long, long time.

For people who have education and expertise in speaking, Toastmasters has a lot to offer you as well. Not only would you be serving as a mentor to other members, who would like to speak with you ease, you can still be learning from advance manuals in communication and Leadership, serve on executive, Compete and/or judge speech contests, Go to workshops & training sessions, etc… How far you go is entirely up to you.  The positions, certificates and awards you earn will certainly back up any credentials you already have.
For students and perhaps people laid off work or looking for work, I believe Toastmasters would do you a world of good. As a member, you will hit a homerun in any interview, because being a toastmaster shows an effort to improve one’s skills in communication and leadership, and what employer doesn’t want that.

I remember I applied to be a cashier at a business, but when the manager higher up found out I was a Toastmaster, not only was I hired, I was offered a supervisor position!  I can also say the current job, which had hundreds of applications, I have is entirely because I was a toastmaster.  My employer knew what Toastmasters was about, and also unexpectedly knew one of my fellow toastmasters members who secretly gave a glowing reference. That’s all it takes.

In fact you may find current employers may take notice. When you complete certificates, you can have letters stating such mailed from Toastmasters International Headquarters informing your employer of your accomplishments. My employers have always taken notice. This is especially important if continual learning is required in your professional such as business and health care.
The input and information I have gained from toastmasters, I could not obtain anywhere else, as inexpensive or as an enjoyable experience.
If your striving for a better job or career, or to basically improve yourself, it just makes good sense to be a toastmaster.
